Before enrolling in an online mortgage broking course, think about the work you will need to do: read the learning material, prepare assessment evidence and set aside regular study time. A flexible timetable helps, but it does not remove those tasks.
Manningham Institute offers online, self-paced study for the FNS40821 Certificate IV in Finance and Mortgage Broking and the FNS50322 Diploma of Finance and Mortgage Broking Management, with start-anytime enrolment. Use this checklist to prepare and identify questions to ask before applying. The individual course pages have current fees and course details.
What does self-paced study involve?
Self-paced study lets you organise your learning around your other commitments. You still need to complete the required assessment and demonstrate the skills for each unit.
Flexible study does not necessarily mean unlimited course access. Confirm the maximum study period and any extension conditions before enrolling. Also confirm when access begins and which enrolment checks apply. Start-anytime enrolment is not a promise of immediate access after payment.
Which qualification should you check?
- FNS40821 Certificate IV in Finance and Mortgage Broking has 12 units. It covers knowledge and skills used in routine finance and mortgage broking work.
- FNS50322 Diploma of Finance and Mortgage Broking Management has 15 units. It addresses more complex work and management responsibilities.
Read our Certificate IV vs Diploma comparison if you are deciding between them. Compare the course content with your experience and intended work, rather than choosing on the title alone.
Check your computer and study setup
Read the course’s technical requirements before applying. Find out which software you need, how to upload documents and whether assessment activities involve a webcam, microphone or recorded video.
Try the tasks on the computer you will use for study. Can you save a document, find it again and upload it? If video is required, check your sound and picture. Arrange a quiet place where you can complete assessment activities without interruptions.
Prepare for assessment, not only the learning material
Online delivery does not remove practical assessment requirements. Find out whether your course includes role-plays, recorded demonstrations or other evidence of applying the skills.
If other people need to participate, ask what they would need to do and who arranges their involvement. You should also know how to submit evidence, how feedback is provided and what happens if an assessor asks for more evidence. Allow preparation time in your study plan.
Make a realistic study plan
Your study schedule will depend on your existing knowledge, available time and progress through assessment. Check both the expected workload and the maximum course access period. An advertised completion estimate is not a personal completion guarantee.
Set aside regular study sessions, then make room for assessment preparation and follow-up work. If you have relevant previous training or work experience, ask about Credit Transfer or Recognition of Prior Learning before assuming you can skip units. MI’s policies and procedures explain the relevant processes.
Questions to ask before paying
- What is the maximum study period, and what are the extension conditions?
- How do I contact a trainer or assessor, and what response time should I expect?
- How long does assessment feedback usually take?
- What equipment, software or assessment participants do I need to arrange?
- What enrolment checks must I complete before course access begins?
- Which fees, refund conditions and policies apply to my application?

A qualification is not a broker licence
Completing a qualification does not, by itself, grant an Australian Credit Licence or authorisation to act as a credit representative. ASIC explains the separate requirements for credit representatives.
Our guide to becoming a mortgage broker in Australia explains the wider pathway. Check the requirements relevant to your intended role before deciding which course to take.
